Geography of Vieste
It is the easternmost city of the Gargano promontory and the province of Foggia. The particular situation of Vieste town planning is linked to the fact that the Gargano, compared to the rest of the Adriatic coast, is a foreign body of karstic origin. Therefore form a mountainous landscape with limestone layers, which are often eroded by the sea. The landscape makes it difficult communications with neighboring municipalities and the provincial capital, Foggia, who is also 99 km.
The town core is situated on a small rocky peninsula, shaped more or less symmetrical and characterized by its two tips:
- Punta di San Francesco, facing east, raised and rocky is the place where you will find the medieval center, since this part of the peninsula offered the best security standards. In this section, full of narrow streets, staircases and arches, is found most of the most prestigious historic buildings (Church of San Francesco, the Cathedral).
- Punta di Santa Croce, facing north, which unlike the first is not in particularly elevated position. In this area, relatively flat, the town began to expand until the nineteenth century. The formation of new districts subsequently led the life of the country (the new city hall, city park, the church of Santa Croce, etc..) Gravitate to more and more towards this part. It is this part which is the port of Vieste, still important for fisheries and maritime traffic to Tremiti Islands, Croatia and towards Manfredonia.
Between the two peaks is found the small beach of Marina piccola, facing the lighthouse (where bathing is prohibited). To the south tip of St. Francis found the long sandy beach of Pizzomunno starting from limestone rocks on which the city was built and which extends southwards towards Pugnochiuso. To the west of the tip of Santa Croce, however, is found as the long beach of San Lorenzo, which unlike the first is still quite full of free beaches. Start from the urban built environment as dall'Ottocento (the port) to extend towards the west, towards Peschici.
